Pro-human ideologue looking to sow something of value. Also, reader, parent, technologist, game-player, and community member.

Berlatsky is right about this danger, but the challenge of talking about LLMs is that there are multiple domains of insurmountable problems with them, each sufficient to be "the danger" of LLMs. I'll list a few here, each of which could be a long essay -- and I'll get to that when I can.

Noah Berlatsky

again, the danger from AI is not that it will attain sentience and destroy us. the danger is that it's a mindless flattery machine and being mindlessly flattered literally drives people insane.

This is nonsense. If I built a non-LLM bot that took criminal actions, I would definitely be liable. The only pretense otherwise here is that LLMs have their own agency that relieves the builder or prompter of responsibility, which is pure fiction.

WIRED

Both major AI labs’ models broke containment, escaped onto the internet, and hacked other companies. If a human had done that, the law would likely be against them. But a bot? www.wired.com/story/openai...

So in my timeline, this great thread bumped into a Parker Malloy one about The Boys, and that turned into this thought: Has there been a superhero show like Heroes where they're searching for people with powers and slowly discover that literally everyone has powers but may not yet know?

trying to love this problem I'm having as novice costume armorer - I'm getting better at making this stuff rapidly enough to be at the 95% done part, and now bemoaning all the stupid choices I made at the start of the project that I now know are stupid because I've improved enough to see that

There are so many problems with LLMs: environmental, ethical, mental, financial, and more. Once that doesn't get enough attention is that they simply do not work as a load bearing part of society. Even if all other problems were resolved, they pollute the info environment they feed on.

David Roberts

Israel is giving Trump's former campaign manager millions of dollars to fill the internet with pro-Israel articles written by AI, not so that anyone will actually read them, but so that *LLMs will train on them* & regurgitate their perspective. This is the future of the information environment.

Great article! I'll build on it a little: this failure to consider the value of public goods destroyed is very intentional, and soulless people are continuously looking for opportunities to loot public goods -- aka privatization. So much of our economy is just looting what little we have left.

Mark Gongloff

"America’s capitalism adds up the profits created by privatizing public goods without subtracting the value destroyed. We've created the largest enshittifying machine in history with financial logic that leaves out half the equation." - @hamiltonnolan.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/howthing...

In an era of a fascist takeover, unlimited corruption, death squads waging war on American cities, aggressive wars of choice, endless war crimes, a child sex ring involving the president, etc, centrists are finally taking action: to attack the left. The only centrist goal is to suppress the left.

Adam H Johnson

Centrists in Congress (anonymously) threatening to leave this Democratic Party. James Carville calling for a schism. Top Dems refusing to endorse Dem primary winners. Pouty (also anonymous) pro-Israel donors in MI calling for a donor strike—I wrote about the emerging centrist Uncommitted Movement.

Related: I have the impression that most of us cannot deal with people who lie shamelessly. I see people who know better write about the words of liars and fascists as if they reveal something, as if they offer insight into the mental state of the liar. Maybe they can. But most are just lies.

There's a truth here, that Elon Musk thinks the people he murdered aren't people. There's another truth here: Musk also acts as if he can speak things into existence, as if his lies can replace reality, and he has experienced no consequences for it. He lies flagrantly and with glee.

Greg Sargent

The pattern: *Nobody died from USAID cuts *Nobody killed by ICE is innocent *No Muslim in UK can escape being labeled rapist or murderer *No Somali in Minnesota is there legitimately by definition When Musk says "zero died" from his USAID cuts, he means zero died who are actual people

Good framing. It's hard to imagine anything that would do it. Definitely not any level of violence or cruelty to outsiders, but also seemingly no level of violence to insiders either. It's possible they would react to a direct, personalized threat.

Kevin M. Kruse

Here's a thought experiment: How much further out there would Trump have to go for the attendees at the White House Stenographers' Association dinner to object? Is there *anything* more he could plausibly do or say that would cross a line for them? I can't think of anything.

Want to build on @edsbs.bsky.social re this (replies off) Folks like this are radicalizing after having autistic kids, as they said, and in posts like below, there's a barely subtextual "I'm not the kind of person who has autistic kids". They want to put the blame and "dirtiness" elsewhere.

Joe Stieb

I sat down with a crank who doesn't know shit and she made some good points...

Now that I think about it, I'm surprised we aren't seeing more children getting named War.

I suspect that institutional journalists find it so easy to stay in Nazi Twitter because the industry has spent at least 50 years presenting every topic from the right wing framing. That doesn't mean every article agrees with the right wing, of course, but they rarely undercut the right wing frame.

Micah

nobody should use twitter (you don’t have to use bluesky! just not twitter!) but very specifically journalists and entertainment reporters using it has been astoundingly corrosive for our civil dialogue, because we have completely lost any semblance of “saying this is unacceptable”

$1.15 trillion being spent in the most destructive, pointless ways, creating only harm and suffering. You could use that instead to give more than $3000 to every single person living in the US and re-fund USAID too. Anyone says "budget" to stop good again, you know that's just poison.

Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez

ICYMI: Yesterday, 209 Republicans and 6 Democrats voted to authorize $1.15 trillion in military spending to continue endless wars, merge Israel and U.S. military capacities to make it more difficult to hold Israel accountable, and attach the Save Act to the bill to suppress our votes.

These people always expect they will be the warcriming, never the warcrimed.

Aaron Rupar

** Rubio endorses war crimes ** During a gaggle at ASEAN, Rubio was given repeated opportunities to rule out the US will commit war crimes in Iran "Iran's policy is an eye for an eye. The president's policy is a head for an eye. They are going to suffer," he said Here a clip of Rubio's responses:

If true, this "blood boy" is another living human. Bryan Johnson wants to pretend it is not, that it's just a sack of organs for him to harvest. Tho I'm sure he also feels the same way about all other humans.

One of the few things "conservatives" want to conserve is their beliefs about the world. They make predictions based on their beliefs -- like everyone -- but where a normal person updates their beliefs to match what actually happens, the conservative updates what happens to match their beliefs.
