It takes coordination to be a master of martial arts *and* be the driver of a tank. A person would need to able to make decisions almost on instinct. You could even say they would need cat-like reflexes...

My wife and kids are much more sentimental than I am. So, they'll sell all my junk from my childhood, but they'll keep the green flannel I wear every winter, my apron will still hang on the back of the pantry door, etc. Honestly, they're better people than I am.

This is the first time my parents are moving since 1975, so that's a big reason I've been able to find all this stuff. I hope my wife and I can stay rooted the same way so our kids will be able to uncover cool stuff in their 40s 😆

Man, that had to be hard. Not that my dad immediately dismissed my mom, but it was only a year later that he remarried. They've been together ever since, but it wasn't easy on me at the time - a lot of anger while dealing with my own depression wrecked most of my 20s. It wasn't fun.

That happens a lot, unfortunately. I can understand the mentality to an extent - my mom died 30 years ago, so it would have been easy for us to just bury the past because of the pain. I'm thankful that we were able to embrace it instead.

I feel you. When our basement flooded, I lost 30 years of comics, books, toys (incl carded SW figures) - and I'll never be able to buy them again. There's not only sentimental value, but they're also assets that you could sell if you needed to. It's not "just stuff".

I'll never understand why some parents want to hurt their kids (emotionally or physically). I'm sorry that happened to you, man. That's awful.

My sister was going through bins I didn't get to and has found a few things I've asked her to set aside for me, but we're talking a shoebox, not any more storage bins. Probably for the best as I'm running out of room anyway...

Unfortunately, I think I've hit the end of surprises from my parents' house. My recent trip home where I found this stuff was so we could clean out the attic, because my parents are selling the house and moving into a smaller place in town.

But she also kept things like elementary school progress reports, report cards, random tests, book reports - stuff that really wasn't important or useful for very long. So, it's been a mixed bag of fun things, but also a little glimpse into her own PTSD of growing up.
