i’m gonna zag and say that Democrats shouldn’t make “hemp THC operators” a form of victim, and they shouldn’t feel the need to go to the mat for them— the hemp lobby made terrible choices, backed a lot of Republicans. Democrats should (say it with me) go for descheduling recreational cannabis.

It got missed by much of the press and a lot of policymakers, but the 2018 Farm Bill loophole for hemp THC did as much to pop the bubble of stigma around cannabis legalization in many Americans minds as did any blue state creating licensed adult-use cannabis markets.

yeah! people are social, and we like to think ourselves as within the “moral community”. Obviously there can be some terrible ideas of what the moral community is, but as a yearning or drive, belonging is so powerful.

But to your question, I think it's kinda embedded in the "gotta build room for people to make mistakes" bit. Some folks really struggle with the idea that folks and society can be made of things that were bad and trying to be better. It's easier to just do up/down math, and get pessimistic.

I think I'd be losing it if I didn't have a near-religious zeal or certainty that democracy can make people better.

I think I would only quibble with the use of the word "simply", or with the idea that simplification brings about accuracy. I think projection is of course available in religious thinking, and something to be interrogated, but it's hard to call all religious thought projection.

I think you could burn through it quickly, it's a brisk read. I'll throw a vote for Technopoly. It's broader and a little more swashbuckling, but the man called some shots.

i think this is a common sensation or experience, and i think the “goal” has to be something that incorporates re-tethering or grounding beyond media-driven perceptions. being untethered and untrusting is a rough sea, getting people to trustworthy practices that build connection, affirm reality, etc

his line about “loving resistance fighter” had kinda saved my life, i think, kept me on a straighter and narrower path than it could have been. it’s the right stance, at least for me

and to be a little clearer, the majority of what Americans right now think is “news” or “journalism” is in fact “show business”.

i don’t anticipate this phenomenon going away anytime soon, this confusion of show business and reality. i also don’t see an easy way to disenfranchise the people who do it. which leads to my gloomy conclusion— we have to practice persuading people to think more, for the rest of our lives.
