1988 and the Daily Star has an entirely accurate prediction about what the UK's relationship to Europe would look like in 1992. This garbage goes back a long way.

My plan to train insects to act as chess pieces is going well - though this knight still hasn't quite mastered its moves.

Alan and Lynda need to include vouchers with the fete ticket to sweeten the deal: - 4 horseshoes for the price of 3 from Chris - 20% off any jar of posh peanut butter in the village shop - 10% more of your body massaged by Kate - "Get away with one minor crime" voucher from Harrison #TheArchers

Rein Me In by Sam Fender and Olivia Dean has apparently broken a 1953 record by spending 19 non-consecutive weeks at number 1. And it's...OK. Quite bland, the arrangement feels too busy, a bit of an 80s feel in places. But I'm old and clearly in a minority on this one.

Reform's 2026 record: Lost to Labour twice Lost to the Greens once Losing to a bin? Maybe.

Why am I not surprised that the Reform UK council leader's top priority is to tell people that his council's data breach wasn't his fault.

Sounds like Reform are going to lose Greater Manchester by a long way, to add to their losses in the two by-elections earlier this year. Now they have to wait and see if their leader can defeat a bin.

Fair play to Burnham, he's not messing around with this "Number 10 North".

160

Let's talk about mayors - a 🧵 Burnham wants to give mayors across the country substantially more powers, money and responsibility. He's looking to roll out "Greater Manchester Plus" (my phrase) across England within three years. That's very fast, and very good. It needs to be done. 1/X

The Green figure is interesting. The Greens started off campaigning strongly and threw lots of money at the campaign in the first couple of weeks. I don't know if the reversal is due to the party backing off or Zack's media troubles. Probably both.

Cycling home this week I was overtaken by a woman in proper cycling gear. Then by nine more women, also in decent cycling gear. I found myself at the back of the pack and was able to hold on long enough to feel like I was part of the gang. Then I turned left and they carried straight on. Happy days

Devolving more income tax, business rates and civil servants to mayors (and areas without mayors) is great - a really positive step forward. But mayors need to have scrutiny over what they do. Outside London, there's no good mechanism to do that at the moment. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Counting is getting underway in the Greater Manchester Mayoral election - likely to take all day. The first Mayoral count was held at Grand Central, but now each borough counts its own votes, so Stockport's count, for example, is in the Town Hall complex.
