I think partly it’s the glazed eyes ‘I’m way more cynical and fucked-up than you’ pose. Mate, you’re really not. Cheekbones is not the same thing as soul.

My take on Rubber Soul. It’s a great album. The reason people think it is the ‘breakthrough to something else’ album is 80pc down to the cover, which sort of codifies ‘serious album’. But don’t let that put you off. You are still allowed to love Beatles For Sale and Help! They haven’t been banned.
