and yes, I know, I also wrote a profile of Didier Deschamps, natural leader. Still true, but tactically France (like everyone else) were two tiers below Spain

I see him in tradition of Oxford political satirists from a few years before such as Ian Hislop and Armando Ianucci, both name-checked in Chums. Close enough to the absurdities of Oxford/UK political culture to understand how it works
