Certainly describes my situation: facing redundancy from a humanities job in weeks, no chance of another academic role, and at a university that went from teaching 15-20 languages to none.

Now this is wild for so many reasons: - SpringerNature retracts 2x70 year-old articles by Max Planck for "copyright violation". - Dead people can't violate copyright. - Editor was not notified. - "Springer Nature is nevertheless still selling the empty PDF for $39.95".

I can only imagine that some defenses had turned into epic "he said she said" battles to have this become policy 🤷

Maybe we scientists could jointly agree as a community not to put out any new preprints or papers for (e.g.) one entire year, giving all of us time & space to thoroughly read the stuff that's already out there. [Nice dream.]

When I did my defense at UOA I was told by the PhD advisor person that this was to allow students to stand on their own feet, and allow them to be honest about terrible supervisors.
