at different times: haxx0r in cDc PhD in using people for ML and vice versa "theory of mind for autonomous cars" startup guy would you believe, went kablooie at present: newsletter -- buttondown.email/apperceptive &c music, politics, nonsense

somebody has a big presentation at defcon this week about clothing that allegedly defeats person detection in flock cameras (and they're selling it) which means I suppose it's time to drag this out again. tl;dr that kinda shit is pretty well guaranteed to work in a brief and limited way if at all

Since people are talking about dazzle camo for foiling face recognition (which doesn’t work unless you pretty much cover your entire face, at which point just wear a mask?) here’s a thing I wrote abbot why training data poisoning doesn’t work; it is the same problem.

this is specifically about wood glue in its details but modern adhesives more broadly are absolutely WILD, like often the best choice for permanently affixing heavy masonry and so on

Waffle 🧇

Modern adhesives are underrated as great inventions of the 20th century. What woodworkers had to deal with before modern wood glue showed up sounds absolutely miserable. Smelly glue made from horses that had to be applied boiling hot, and didn’t even hold that well.

I feel this—I mean, not the specifically British bits, I’m baffled by those obviously—it’s so easy for me to fall into just posting about grim and/or tiresome bullshit on here, when somewhere there’s a dog with an empty peanut butter jar.

Cliff Chapman VO

Endlessly posting about Brexit, Johnson, Farage, Trump, COVID deniers and all manner of other issues has destroyed my mental health over years. Some is unavoidable - die Trump die, Binface more like WINface - but I want Doctor Who and filthy puns mainly.

I just looked this up out of curiosity and my pleasant, not notably dense, mostly residential inner-ring suburb full of 1-3 family houses is SEVEN TIMES as dense as Palo Alto

I'm not going to QT but there's a silicon valley NIMBY complaining about maintaining the historical character of Palo Alto and man that place should look like fucking singapore. Market cap of tech companies based in and around there is like $14 trillion and it's full of fucking bungalows? So broken

can’t believe our current all-ages literacy crisis is making me a little nostalgic for the pretentious “we publish experimental poetry chapbooks and have strong opinions on Melville and the 1800s fur trade” Literature Boys of my college years in the late 2000s/early 2010s.

I support this while also having immediately hidden the article preview post kicking off all the discourse because I, like Odysseus (text version) am a complicated man

Mary Branscombe

honestly, I look forward to days of discourse about the CEO and the liberal bubble, because we did that every time the woman who was a CEO annoyed us, we had better do it this time
