this is specifically about wood glue in its details but modern adhesives more broadly are absolutely WILD, like often the best choice for permanently affixing heavy masonry and so on

Modern adhesives are underrated as great inventions of the 20th century. What woodworkers had to deal with before modern wood glue showed up sounds absolutely miserable. Smelly glue made from horses that had to be applied boiling hot, and didn’t even hold that well.

I just looked this up out of curiosity and my pleasant, not notably dense, mostly residential inner-ring suburb full of 1-3 family houses is SEVEN TIMES as dense as Palo Alto
