I wonder how many Americans truly understand that corporate media is listening to precisely *none* of the criticisms leveled against it. In a decade of the Trump era, they haven't changed their methods a whit and still don't understand why we see the WHCA dinner as contemptible.

No one there doubts how to run an honorable event. No politicians, no pundits, no celebrities, no lobbyists, no hangers-on, no television coverage, no ostentatious glamor. Just a celebration of journalism of every sort—indie, public, corporate, citizen, experimental. They refuse.

The WHCA goes on annually because it celebrates everything corporate media adores: money, fame, glamor, access, networking, marking oneself part of the in-group, being seen with celebrities, patting itself on the back. There'll never not be a dinner and it'll never not be a betrayal of journalism.
