Interested in why public anti-immigrant sentiment is so geographically concentrated? Here's some work with @denis-cohen.bsky.social testing a new theory on how regional labour market risks and inter-regional migration shape long-term spatial polarisation. Just out in @bjpols.bsky.social 👇

Denis Cohen

Just published in @bjpols.bsky.social: @sergipardos.bsky.social and I show that inter-regional moves in pursuit of employment security reduce individual worries about immigration—a mobility pattern that, in the aggregate, reinforces spatial polarization in anti-immigration sentiment. cup.org/3XiB6yD

Very good review on the relationship between immigration and the welfare state: policy effects on migration intentions, migrant fiscal contributions, and public opinion. Really useful! ⬇️

Will Allen

How does immigration relate to welfare states and public opinion about access to welfare? @mfreino.bsky.social, @isabel-ruiz.bsky.social and I have a new open-access review of the evidence in @oxrepjournal.bsky.social. doi.org/10.1093/oxre... #polisky #econsky #socsky #migcitsky 1/n

Looking at the electoral geography of West vs East Germany, they look like two different countries. @anjaneundorf.bsky.social's take on why this is happening 👇

Anja Neundorf

The most striking result from yesterday’s German election #btw2025 🇩🇪: 🔹 35 years after reunification: The GDR is redrawn on this map. 🔹 The AfD won 45 out of 48 electoral districts in the East. 🔹 In some parts of Saxony, they came close to 50%! Why is this happening? Here’s my take 👇

Here's the 2024 Annual report of the Migration Advisory Committee. Quite a bit on economic migration numbers, its relationship with skills shortages, and the fiscal contribution of migrants. www.gov.uk/government/p...

Do radical right parties need to detach themselves from the legacy of right-wing authoritarian regimes to be successful? It would appear not, or not anymore. New work with @anjaneundorf.bsky.social now forthcoming at @thejop.bsky.social. A couple of thoughts 👇

New working paper with a bunch of lovely folks. Female labour market incorporation increases gender conservative attitudes among men, beyond cultural change. Mechanisms compatible with economic self-interest. Without elite mobilisation though, the effects remain in the private sphere. 👇👇

Catherine E. de Vries

New paper on gender backlash: shorturl.at/8eiZw Findings: ⬆️ female labor market participation ⬆️ private grievances among men, but does NOT automatically translate into support for conservative gender policy or for far-right parties. For this, you need activation by political elites. A 🧵 1/n
