Like comics and genre fiction have long been guilty of having characters be functionally white with Romani flavor text for exoticism whenever convenient, it's a shitty legacy to grapple with. But this is just objectively a terrible solution.

I think there's some argument to be made that erasing the Romani aspects of these characters is the path of least resistance to be less problematic (even then they don't have to default to white the way they do!). I don't think there's any case that having a white dude do a weird accent helps.

It's a hideously flawed policy. Queer men on prep test more regularly and know their HIV status better than pretty much any other demographic.

Not sufficiently. Most queer men remain ineligible unless wholly abstinent for months and off of HIV preventing medication. In practice nothing was changed.

If they ever make it ACTUALLY POSSIBLE for queer men to do it I'll be there.
