I like how everyone has an airline they have a blood feud against, and every airline has its cult of haters. I'm with you re: AA. The nicest thing I can say about them is that the last time they absolutely screwed me, they at least were (eventually) generous with compensation.

Half of Mamdani’s genius is convincing ordinary people that progressive ideas will materially benefit their lives and aren’t scary communism, and the other half is convincing terminally online leftists that basic good government is progressive and isn’t neoliberal shilling for evil corporations.

Ultimately, if she’s saying “let’s hold the vote, I’ll campaign for independence, but ultimately whatever PRers decide is what we should do”, that’s fine. But the tenor of the statement at least suggests she may be arguing for more than that, and that would prompt legitimate pushback.

b) What happens in the interim? If PR is ready to vote for statehood today, will DAC try to thwart the vote to buy time to change minds? If so, that’s her extending the colonialism until PRers agree to hold the “right” view (bad). And if not, it’s basically option 2 above (fine but pointless).

a) Why does it matter so much to her the structure by which PR achieves democratic representation, so long as it’s one PRers want? I can see having a mild preference on this, but DAC’s preference doesn’t seem mild, which rests uneasily with the relevant value of respecting PR self-determination.

3) And if she’s saying “even if most PRers support statehood now, I want to persuade a majority to support independence bc I think that’s the better solution,” that’s not *intrinsically* bad, but it does raise some fraught questions….

I think a large part of the question is how DAC’s stance interacts with the possibility that Puerto Ricans might prefer statehood to independence. 1) If she’s saying “we should reject statehood and insist on independence even if a majority of Puerto Ricans vote otherwise,” that’s clearly bad.

(FWIW, I’m a longstanding member of the “independence or statehood—whatever Puerto Rico decides” club, with the caveat that I think the choice has to be made and maintaining the status quo is unacceptable no matter what).

I bet we could get these people to drop their support for Puerto Rican independence if we called it a “two state solution.”
