Fine, but I thought we were talking about vandalism and theft that deterred transit users. Someone stole and joyrode an N train a few years back. That ain’t good but it’s not exactly deterring Susie Q Commuter from getting to work on the subway.

Wild guess there hasn’t been a subway derailment that has affected normal service in 2 years.

And my point is that literally millions of people ride the subway everyday without thinking about this stuff because, although it does happen, it’s basically inconsequential.

Last year I took the subway to work from Brooklyn to the Bronx way more often than I would have liked at 3-4 am, but I never felt unsafe. Uncomfortable, sure, but the thing about reliable frequency is that even at 4 am there are dozens of others around.

But it’s not 99%. During rush hour there are 100+ others in your subway car. 1,000 others on the same train. One encounters so many others in everyday travel that one outlier *really is* a disruption, but it surely ain’t something that is seen every day, every week, or even every month.

It costs a ton less money to fix on a case-by-case basis then fixing all trains and stations after leaving it unaddressed for years.

This happened a lot after the Knicks won the championship, too.
