Can God design an institution so independent it cannot be captured by God herself?

What is a dissertation? A complete statement on a singular, strictly defined topic? An opening salvo in a long run research agenda? A set of explorations meriting more or less follow up? A repository of ideas and literature to draw on for the rest of one's career? All of the above?

What did they think would happen?
