16. How many books? I’m discovering why Goodreads is helpful! I think I’ve read a dozen this year, which is very poor for me but part of how my life has developed since becoming a dad. I have not included the nearly fifty books I’ve read with J. I can recite most Mr Men books from memory.

15. William Temple’s “Readings in St John” is perhaps the best Biblical commentary ever written. Even if you are not a Christian—perhaps especially if not—Temple manages to guide you to a place where the whole world, and the people in it, will never look the same again. Transformative.

14. I mark and dog-ear all of my books. I only use pencil, unless it’s something I’m reading for work then I might even (shock-horror 😱) highlight. I am someone who re-reads things several times, rather than gives them away, so I have no qualms about this. Books are tools, not ornaments.

13. I have Goodreads I never use. Like the film equivalent, never saw a convincing reason to use it. Maybe that will change eventually.

12. Compulsory high school reading, I loved Of Mice and Men and pretty much any Shakespeare. Could give or take most of the poems, especially the Love and Relationships stuff. Only really rediscovered poetry during the pandemic.

I posted about how awful a crime I think it is, but 20 years is an astonishing length of time. I don’t think people really think through what these long sentences actually look like.
