The WV Legislature is looking like they will, thankfully, weigh in on the debate over Flock cameras. I don't think a lot of folks realize that even the most progressive towns or cities are undermining privacy with these contracts - and unwittingly or dimwittedly abetting the surveillance state.

Mark CopelovitchPeople want <individual> political heroes to emerge from a system that has <~zero> institutional mechanisms for that to happen. It's a massive agent-vs-structure problem in American political discourse. Everyone wants the next Obama when the answer is fixing the broken institutions.
Yes, too many people miss that point. For folks that just think the administration is inept in everything, you'd be hard pressed to find a president in the last 200 years who was better at getting what they want. You could also say no president learned the lessons of his first term better.
Jill Lawrence"The goal isn’t programs that work well, it’s to save money for their priorities—military interventions, tax breaks for rich people and corporations, and immigration dragnets, deportations, and detentions." www.thebulwark.com/p/hes-making...
Gonna be a lot more of this - even here in Morgantown (where I'm on our water utility board), we have thousands of attempts to breach the systems governing drinking water and wastewater.
Lindsay BeyersteinI can't stress enough what a crisis this is. Trump's own intelligence agencies concluded that Iran attacked Minnesota's critical infrastructure and Trump is saying that it's Minnesota's own fault and denying it was Iran. The federal government won't defend blue states in a literal war.
Also, add these to Flock Cameras, which are entering contracts with even the most progressive cities for facial recognition, tracking, etc.
Zander Furnas100 percent chance that these systems, once installed, get used against student protesters imo
Yes. And I think on the ground, we're going to be studying gambling soon the same way we study the cocaine and opioid epidemics in a future decade. It saturates life for a few generations younger than me, especially among young men.
Brian CookProfessional sports worldwide have gotten so corrupt and infected by the likes of Draft Kings that they make thoroughbred horse racing look relatively clean by comparison.
No idea what these metrics are, but there's a lot face validity on both dimensions for the Mountain State. We're very very prepared and not very flexible. WV

Poetically, it is exactly what McConnell would do were he Beshear.
Mueller, She WroteI think @govandybeshear.bsky.social should just appoint a Dem to fill McConnell’s seat. It would force proof of life, and the state law that stripped him of that power should be challenged in court. I’m sure Thune would refuse to seat the appointee, but I think it’s a fight worth having. BE BOLD!

Another arrow in the heart of neutral competence as a governing principle. Generally speaking, presidents (of either party) don't hand back power. So a future congressional majority may have to take on its own party leader.
