If you wanted to get more carried away, they do also make pwm fan controllers with a knob that allow you to control the speed, but for the most part "plug in and go" is fine for CRBs

They're probably 12v if they're standard tower fans, at which point you can wire them to any 12v supply, extra wallwarts work well, just check the voltage. There are some fairly cheap barrel jack socket to screw terminal adapters if you want a cleaner solution than just twisting the wires together.

Completely fair. I'm not actually sure we disagree all that much, I was talking about them being used as knowledge engines, as grammar engines there's a use for them, if nothing else as a fancy autocorrect. Hell, used that way they can even run locally and not scrape data and burn absurd power.

People are using these things to file legal briefs, decide which mushrooms to eat, and make decisions about their children's health. Hell, the US military used Claude to pick targets and hit a school. My whole point is that people are using grammar engines for things they're in no way designed for.

I did say that's what they're good at, and you're right, that's exactly what they are, which is the problem. I'd have much less of an issue with them if the use case was still people reflavoring emails and writing song lyrics in the style of Shakespeare, but that's not where we're at anymore.

Exactly. It's certainly possible to create a system capable of many of the things LLMs are claimed to be capable of doing, but not by using the methods used to create LLMs. It's a problem of knowledge and context, which LLMs don't deal with at all, but both would necessary to fulfill the claims.

Just because I think neuro-evolutionary algorithms are kinda cool and can solve some interesting and unique problems, doesn't mean I also have to support the environment destroying bullshit generator that makes people psychotic.

What? I've very consistently stated the problem is with LLMs, which are why these companies are constantly and ceaselessly scraping the entire internet, which was the whole point of my first post. Like, ML is a huge field, but everything being sold as "AI" right now is LLMs, which are trash.

And, to be clear, I'm not claiming that all ML is useless or anything like that, it's LLMs specifically that are this level of trash. I'm usually one of the first people to be excited about a new tech, but these things are hot garbage, especially once you try to use them for anything complex.

That's just it, the statistically most likely output isn't necessarily gibberish, in fact it usually sounds pretty convincingly like it was written by a person. The problem is, that doesn't make it any more correct. The issue with LLMs is that they have no weighting for correct information.

No matter how much information is shoved at them, and no matter how much power they consume, they will *never* be capable of the kinds of things they're being sold for, because they can't be. It's the reason they regularly produce garbage output, it's the most statistically likely response.

LLM's are not fit for purpose, regardless of who's involved, because the fundamental tech underlying them is not designed for any of the purposes for which they are currently being used. They're statistics engines, designed for, and good at, one thing, producing vaguely human sounding text.

I don't actually mean Sam Altman himself or anything, but it was absolutely scraper traffic from AI ingestion. (I use Sam Altman as a shorthand for AI bro assholes, he and openai are far from the only terrible dipshits in that space.)

Yeah, I've had to take at least one site down because Sam Altman won't stop hammering on everything constantly. The traffic came from a unique IP with every call, and had no logic to say "oh this isn't actually a unique link, I should stop calling that".
