Just started Nirvanna the Band the Show and holy hell "The Banner" is a strong opener.

Love Over Gold hands down. Immaculately produced. Only possible curveball is if you want listen to a legit brilliant Atmos album, the immersive audio version of Brothers in Arms is incredible.

Oh so he WAS legitimately accomplished? It had never occurred to me that the hulking stunt work he did was more an issue with how certain types of martial arts film. I just thought it was bad choreography!

Chuck Norris sucked but had an aw shucks charisma that you can kind of understand. But Seagal? They made Die Hard But On a Battleship with Tommy Lee Jones and that movie almost rules except there he is, sucking the air out of it at every turn.

I feel like @alexnavarro.bsky.social might know if this exists? Is there an essay or deep dive that explains Seagal’s success? He’s kind of breathtaking in how awful he was as an actor and a cinematic martial artist. Even his good movies are not good when he’s the focus of a scene. And yet!

OK while I'm on defense about hifi aesthetics: The only speakers I might prefer to the Carvers are Bowers and Wilkins 800 series speakers, which sometimes show up for manageable prices used. But MK thinks they look like penises wearing another penis as a hat and have no place in a living room.

Everyone is kind of at a loss because McIntosh kind of perfected a very functional and identifiable design language for their bulky boxes and everyone is struggling with the fact that REALLY these devices want to be six aluminum sheets around a circuit board with huge capacitors.

Heh. Kind of a tricky band, most of their albums are nothing like one another. Making Movies is probably their best rock album. Two or three of their greatest songs are on it. Love Over Gold might be my favorite, close to a concept album. Brothers in Arms is the big one. Great, not my fav.

I can't fully blame people for wanting something a little less industrial and blocky. Like these were also superb and less than half the price (still eye-watering). But they're just giant toe-breakers and furniture-crushers. holthill.com/products/thr...

<sighs> This one in particular is up its own ass with a layer of irony. There's supposedly an engineering reason for the tube but I think mostly it's them wanting to be tongue-in-cheek about the fact their design pointedly eschews vacuum tubes by mimicking fetishy tube amp aesthetics.

See, this is the stuff that's visiting the hifi shop is good for. There is ZERO chance I would ever buy these. But they sounded absolutely amazing just through a decent-but-unremarkable pair of floorstanding speakers. For the diminutive size they seem miraculous. holthill.com/collections/...
