I guess the real question is when "a working relationship" turns into "ideological alignment." Pledges of loyalty, enforcement of pseudo-civility, and partisan-based hiring goals all strike me as steps that would take one from the former to the latter.

And given the Association of American Universities' involvement here, it's worth revisiting their previous statement on the so-called Higher Education Compact, especially the part about not being ideologically aligned with any [presidential] administration.

Right? I've got students who have dusted off their coding skills, breaking out oil paints they haven't touched in years, bringing in photos from trips they took ages ago—even as some of them admit at the end that writing a 10-page paper would have been faster, they're relishing it.

I'm impressed they managed to say this with a straight face.

So much of what comes up in education policy discussions is our own neuroses, projected onto our personal stereotype of college students.

I say this as someone who: 1) Likes a lot of what Danielle Allen has written about civics and civic education. 2) Has spent a lot of time over the last six months thinking about ways to teach "civil discourse" WITHOUT top-down mandates.

As someone recently put it to me, a lot of faculty [and uni admins] consider the rough-and-tumble of politics to be beneath them and then they're shocked when politics comes and finds them.

No idea, which is why I was glad we could raise the issue in this space.

Our table went with a good train to Raleigh. Common themes in the "one word": stagnant, opportunity, potential, siloed, static.

A cool audience participation aspect - each table brainstormed one (1) investment that could be made in Fayetteville, the obstacle to getting it done, and one word to describe our economy. Chancellor Allison is now going around the room, talking to a spokesperson from each table.
