This year has been a good one for reading so far… Some decent momentum too, well ahead of where I was this time last year.

Blackout warnings in Hungary, triggered by an outage on a gas plant and the shutdown of a nuclear plant due to low water levels. Damn that intermittent power…

Turns out other types of power generation also don't enjoy extreme weather events…

130

It's a good job the intermittent price of gas doesn't directly impact electricity prices…

The 151-page Whitelee re-powering "scoping report" has been released as promised www.energyconsents.scot/ApplicationD...

Twice the output for nearly half the number of wind turbines… This is exactly why re-powering is such an important tool for levelling-up the renewable assets we already have. I'm very curious to dig into the plans once they are published later in the week. www.scottishpower.com/w/plans-to-r...

If you're interested in how the grid is run then I recommended looking through the weekly @neso-energy.bsky.social Operational Transparency Forum. It's super nerdy but a great way to understand what's happening week-on-week, a little on the why, and also a chance to have some questions answered.

It's astounding to see the same people who complain about high electricity bills now complaining about a policy that will reduce electricity bills. Is it the solution in isolation? Of course not. Does it take us a small distance in the right direction? Yes.

If the only way you can get people to listen is shouting in all caps then perhaps it's not as strong an argument as you think

"Ditch Net Zero"? Only 9 months ago you claimed Octopus were the ones being anti-Net Zero. What happened Dale?

Dale Vince

Net zero has become a crusade and all notions of value for money and business like decisions have gone out the window. Reform are making much of this. That’s why I say ditch net zero, break up DESNZ and re purpose £50 Billion into issues which affect people right here right now.

Less than a year between these. What happened Dale? 🤔

What feature is missing from my live energy map? If you could snap your fingers and add a new feature to my energy map, what would it be? It doesn't need to be map-related either, I'm warming to the idea of a general "come here to see the state of the GB electricity system past and present."

Robin Hawkes

It's here! All power assets are now live on my GB Renewables Map ⚡ That's right, it's not just wind farms any more. Now you can see live and historic data for gas power plants, nuclear, grid batteries, biomass, pumped hydro and even a bit of solar.

Obvious perhaps but also kinda fascinating how the breaks in a football match can have a massive impact on instantaneous demand www.neso.energy/news/neso-re...

It's still not too late to make suggestions for this

I'm working on some (free and public) content on how to tell stories using data. But I need your help… It'll be a round-up of the lessons I've learnt over the years teasing stories out of complex datasets, and how to tell those stories in simple ways that anyone can easily understand.

I'm hiring 👀🐙⚡ This is a rare opportunity to join the Data Visualisation team at Octopus Energy, the largest (and most exciting) energy supplier in Britain. jobs.lever.co/octoenergy/b...

AI slop has finally made it's way to energy… To be fair we reached that point a while ago but wow has it got bad lately. A particular favourite has to be this bizarrely-proportioned map of Britain that claims to show the TNUoS demand zones that "exactly align with the country's 14 DNO regions"

Exciting news tomorrow… That is all for now 😉
