It's not comparable they are paying substantially less and they already pay way more than other developed countries so it's a bad comparison and we're doing even worse than the bad comparison. Final assembly that we pay for temporarily is not going to do anything for industrial capacity.

A "factory" which is really just the maintenance facility being used for final assembly is not building an industry. I would advocate for real industrial policy measures but that's not what these are. Saying we are in line with Amtrak is like saying subways we build are in line with New York.

Supply management actually impacts the average Canadian consumer spending way too much on locomotives for a train that most Canadians will never use does not

And even when you roll all this stuff up optimistically we are still playing twice as much per unit which is insane!

Ours doesn't include maintenance and assembly, that was the extra 300 million odd dollars. And the assembly is a very silly addition we aren't actually building an industry or anything we are literally buying a jobs number to avoid having Europeans build everything.

Not four times more expensive

We don't get manufacturing in Canada we get a charade. We pay a bunch of extra money and then they ship mostly finished stuff over to be completed in Canada so that we can feel proud while achieving nothing. It's a very big deal and it's sad that you don't see that.

We are getting less locomotives (45 not 57) for roughly four times the price (the Kiwis paid about 300m CAD). The fact that this isn't a major news item is crazy.

Well Canada has very little right now so yes most likely we do need additional capacity. We aren't talking about American levels of building or anything close to them

There is so much potential land where we could build solar with minimal cost. Power companies don't get to just take Prime protected land and throw up the panels.
