I have been walking by Street Hawker for weeks thinking about getting this sandwich & finally found myself with enough spare calories at the end of the day to try it. Filipino Adobo-style fried chicken ('dobo is a Native family staple around here btw). Perfect slaw, but otherwise disappointing. 1

First time seeing that - a drone washing a building.

Hey human civilization — nailed it. Done. Let’s eat this till we die and leave the ruins to Claude.

I don’t think we need lessons on how to manage the known universe’s largest forest from people that haven’t figured out lettuce.

The cyclospora outbreak has reached 7,400 cases across 9 states. The FDA just recalled 1.6 million eggs due to salmonella contamination. Screwworm cases continue to rise. And we’ve just surpassed 2,300 measles cases — breaking 2025’s record. “Make America Healthy Again.”

Actually controversial opinion: all the music at the beach, everyone with their own speakers is kind of nice, it’s a proper vibe. Our thing lately is sunset swim at Kits and the music and crowd makes it extra.

The water’s 22 in Vancouver today. It’s the best swimming here so far all year.

TIL - this cloud visible from Vancouver is a pyrocumulus or flammagenitus cloud - it’s the Boston Bar fire. The canyon there is lined with First Nations fishing stations that have been continuously repaired for 1000+ years, sites so old footprints have been worn into the stone.

No filter sunset.

Went swimming at Kits just in time for the sunset. There’s nothing in Canada like Vancouver’s summer beach scene.

There’s a historical footnote, a sultan in Zanzibar, who was trying to fight the British, but couldn’t get his ships out to sea because of relentless, unfavorable winds. In frustration he threatened to turn his cannons on the wind if it didn’t let up. Still…not as dumb as trying to tariff the wind.

I got a better one - your name if you were a gangster would be your mother's maiden name and your first pet's name. Ex. Smith Sprinkles... And another cool one - to find out how much money you're going to make in your life - list the first 9-digits of your social insurance number.

your baseball pitcher name is your grandfather’s first name and the last thing you bought i’ll go first mine’s Dominic Sandals

It will never cease to annoy me how NONE of you recognize how much Javier Milei looks like Dr Who.

I’ve become a ‘seal whisperer’. This one seal was hanging out in front of of my beach office (aka park bench by 3rd beach) all afternoon - and then my wife and I went swimming at Jericho (across the bay), and out of nowhere we had another seal swim between us.

Friendly geese feeding by the banana trees (and ignorantly blocking the bike lane like some common tourists) feels uniquely Vancouver.

My company - we do First Nations data - crunched the numbers on gender and band governance. One big takeaway, all female band governments do more than 50% better than all male band governments. Details here: www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...

This is some late stage Soviet Union stuff. Back then they had these people called Sovietologists whose job was to translate BS Soviet news coverage into facts. So if Yuriy Andropov was reported to have a cold, it meant he was in a coma. If he was 'resting' it meant '...in peace'.

A weekend goal is to find animals in the wild. We saw this one seal swimming on his back, spitting in the air, but didn't get video. But I did get these - the Vancouver to Burnaby Fraser bike lane is now open where I saw this heron. Also, urban koi fish, a frog on a rock and a turtle in a tree.

I talked to a lead scientist at SETI and they said aliens are likely, but not here. Here we may see their artifacts in the form of AI - Von Neumann machines, which would most likely be quite small - and account for UFO sightings. Reminder: we sent probes on interstellar trajectories in the 70s.

ashley fairbanks

what if aliens came but they were just like…12 inches tall?
