the book i'm writing has a lot of references to the odyssey and i am thinking about removing them & i KNOW it's so stupid to be like "i liked it before it was cool" about the work people consider foundational to western lit but i really don't want ppl to think nolan could have any influence on me

okay to be fair to those ruffled by wilson's take - i get that we really don't like it when someone dislikes something we like. but as someone who thinks the matrix reloaded is the best film in the franchise i am inured to this particular pain

but yeah in all my years of life i never once believed the trojans accepting the horse. just assumed it was a "u had to be there" thing but i 100% fully bought it in nolan's portrayal, which in turn made me believe in odysseus's cleverness, so for that alone i appreciate this adaptation muchly.

it gave the film a certain Marvel quality. hated that.

even the criticising of the non white actors bit is bad faith imo. i read it as 'none of the main ppl were played by actors of colour so how progressive was this film on the race front rly?' even the underwritten white women (calypso & circe) had more fleshed out roles & lines.

i love being offline then being online again because i'm genuinely so shocked people had problems with the emily wilson review. did ppl uncritically like this movie? i would say it wasn't as substanceless as she made it out but the writing was attrocious. they literally sail off into the sunset.

i do think i'd have preferred that american doing their best impression of a generic europeanish oldtimey accent cuz hearing "dad" made me giggle every single time.

it was literally so funny how many celebrities were in this film. not gonna lie, it really took me out of the world. like they didn't have a single non super famous person in it lol

turning calypso into a frame for odysseus telling/remembering his story was goofy. what a sad reductivist use of her character.
