Double huh. I used to live in the Var but never really met any Occitan/Provençal speakers. That observation makes sense though.

WORDS CONSTRUCTED LIKE TRAIN CARRIAGES. That is EXACTLY correct. Right down to how it can feel like the train is about to split without warning, and the half you're in is now headed somewhere entirely different to where you need to be.

Huh. Seems that in French and in the local Provençal dialect, the ending S in the place name is silent, but in other Provençal dialects, you pronounce it. For the liqueur the ending S is always pronounced. And I am also partial to pastis. :)

Do you drink "Cassisse" in "Cassi," or is it the other way around? I can never remember. (They're both spelled "Cassis" but are not pronounced alike.)

Listening to the Once soundtrack this afternoon. In the Oscar song, "Falling Slowly," the second pre-chorus goes like this: "Well, you have suffered enough / And warred with yourself / It's time that you won." It took me by surprise today—I had forgotten it. And my heart burst all over again.
