Except you're ignoring another important economic concept here: opportunity cost. As soon as the choice is presented, there are three potential outcomes: 1) gain $50k 2) gain $1M 3) gain nothing The third outcome *cost you $50k*. It's about whether losing $50k is palatable, not potential value.
