We’re small and scrappy, but we accomplish a lot at @bikeeastbay.bsky.social! Contrary to the conspiracy narrative, our advocacy work is nearly all funded by individual donors. Tomorrow is the last day to become a member on a sliding scale, starting at $1. Join us: bikeeastbay.org/staffgiving/

It’s incredibly weird to me that some people maintain conspiracy theories about the small, local non-profit I work for. They could literally just come to our 1 room office w no plumbing & see what we’re up to. But instead they prefer to maintain a myth that we’re shadowy, compromised evil doers?

Will some folks who drive to Hopkins today avoid it in the future? Sure. But plenty of others will still drive, park a couple blocks away and end up spending money at multiple stores/restaurants because they’ll walk by more spots. And others will get motivated to get e-bikes, changing their lives.

Huge congrats & thank you to Walk Bike Berkeley, North Berkeley Now, and everyone who spoke, emailed or sent postcards! Despite the lopsided vote, it was not a sure thing. Councilmembers struggled with this decision, and effective advocacy made the difference. This hard fought win will save lives.

Good news! Council voted 7-2 tonight to repave and rebalance Hopkins Street with pedestrian, bicycle, and transit improvements, including protected bike lanes! Thank you to everyone who pushed to make Hopkins safe for all!

On a family vacation, and now that my kid is asleep I’m watching the Berkeley City Council hearing on Hopkins bike lanes. This is what everyone does on their vacation, right?

Always so satisfying to fly by car traffic while riding transit, even more so when you’ve just arrived in a city. Thanks @trimet.org!

Condo construction defect reform is critically important, and I so appreciate that my Assemblymember has taken this on. Read this thread to learn why AB 1903 will lead to many more condos and more opportunities for affordable home ownership.

Buffy Wicks

If we want to make homeownership more attainable in California, we have to start building condos again. Today, we barely do. Here's why that matters — and why I'm working on reforming California's construction defect laws. 🧵

One of my favorite spots in El Cerrito is this group of rocks in the Hillside Natural Area. They’re not too hard to climb, great to sit on, and offer impressive views of the Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, and San Francisco. Had a great time there today with my daughter.

So appreciate the El Cerrito Bay Resistance Pod for organizing and to everyone who attended this evening’s vigil for all of the people who have been murdered by ICE. It was healing to grieve with community as all of their names were read, and we responded, “we remember you and demand justice.”

There’s still time to participate in Contra Costa County Library summer reading. Complete the card, get a free book, and get entered to win prizes. My family turned in ours today at the El Cerrito library and got great books. Many other libraries offer similar summer reading programs.

Wow! We are planning to swap our gas stove for induction later this summer, and now I’m extra motivated as my wife and kid have minor asthma.

Sammy Roth

Insane new research. Scientists gave asthma patients free electric stoves to replace their gas stoves, then checked to see if symptoms improved. Not only did symptoms improve, ditching gas was *better than medicine.* Details in today's newsletter: www.climatecoloredgoggles.com/p/electric-s...

I really want to ride buses but it’s so hard to depend on. AC Transit cut 72R, promising the reduction in service would make the other 72 routes reliable. Now there’s less service and it’s just as unreliable. I now check 30 min+ ahead of time to change plans if my bus is canceled, as it was today.

Riding BART from El Cerrito Plaza to Downtown Berkeley always feels like magic. 5 minutes! No faster way to travel. I checked and driving would have taken me 14 minutes. With parking, could have been closer to 20 minutes.

We’re seeing this in the Bay Area too. E-bikes are for all ages and many abilities. Last month at the @bikeeastbay.bsky.social and @avaenergy.org e-bike test and ride event, the most popular bikes were adaptive e-bikes and electric trikes.

Jennifer

Dispatches from the big ebike event in Portland - the range of ages, abilities, and bike styles really emphasizes the transformative power of e-bikes. I saw someone biking in with a cane in her basket. Don’t let anybody tell you this isn’t a viable path to sustainable transportation.

My wife and I went out to brunch today and were shocked to see about half the folks at the restaurant eating mixed greens salad. We’re big salad fans, but there’s no way we’re eating lettuce we know nothing about now. Are people not following the news or do they think Californians are immune?
