I'd also say that part of this was also some pre-2016 naivete that I grew up largely believing the myth we were taught that racial and gender equality were mostly achieved and at the very least everyone agreed on the goal and it was just a matter of time getting there. We were not all agreed.

FACTS There is nothing like being lectured by Professional Rural Understanders(TM) about how "we just need to reach out to farmers!" Sir I AM A FARMER. Zip it & shovel something while I catch you up on how farms & money actually work. Or just plain zip it.

Yep. I say it would have to be 4 for simplicity, but really, the ratio can be any formula, and once you have that, you’re locked in. (You can in theory try to cheat with a very complex formula, but At that point you’re just making things worse for everyone )

And yes the main hangups are "farmers don't wanna" and "consumers are way less up in arms about worker well-being than about 'I don't wanna eat pesticides.'" So, that is what it is, in a very "Upton Sinclair was right" kinda way.

And lest it seem an arbitrary example, consider this: D&D spell casting can TRIVIALLY be switched to spell points rather than level slots, but doing so would break things, because spell points would require the answer to be “4”. I like it as an example because it’s very simple and concrete.

As much as we like to talk about “balance” in D&D like it’s some kind of actual science, the facade quickly fades when you ask something like “ok, how many first level spells is a fourth level spell worth?”

Yep, "you can't just fire people, keep their passports, do brutality, not even a little bit" was in some anti-slavery reforms to the H2A program in 2024. Farmers were outraged at the "gov't overreach & red tape." They went hard for Trump in '24, & he repealed those farm worker regs in June 2025.

So, I confess, Dark Sun has never been my bag, and I based on their hit rate with setting so far, I'm not terribly optimistic, but the prospect of the maps? THAT intrigues me.

This SHOULD be true, but genuinely depend a lot on your environment. Plenty of cultures preference the ease of safety over the complexity of substance. In such an org, being the safe choice is a skill that can push you to success. It’s not a GOOD thing, of course, but it’s the 2020s, so…
