The settler mobs operate on tacit approval from the Israeli government and the IDF are on hand to protect them in case anyone shoots back. This gets to the core of it though: Palestinians - as subhumans, within the Israeli system - have no recognised right to self-defence.

Have just finished Ghada Samman’s Beirut Nightmares (1976) which I’ve spent the last few months on because it is so richly textured and dense, I kept stopping to marvel at her description and turns of phrase. A sorely underread writer. A testament to the power of fiction to transport and devastate.

I have a confession to make: I’ve read and reread this description of Jabra Ibrahim Jabra having been recently introduced to his writing, and this description makes me wish I’d known him. Or had him for a neighbour or uncle. And, it rings true: he is of sweet temprament and charm in his writing.
