”Europe is ground zero when it comes to impacts” from climate change. 2026 is just the beginning. It will inevitably get worse. It will get worse and worse and worse to the point where, I’m afraid, we’ll be passing the limits of adaptation” - Prof. Johan Rockström. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/29/w...

Summer of Heat, Fires and Storms Is a Reckoning for Europe on Climate (Gift Article)The continent is experiencing some of its biggest fires and highest temperatures ever. Residents are fleeing, leaders are struggling to respond and “it will get worse,” one climate expert said.www.nytimes.com

This looks v. positive 👏 But to be meaningful it has to lead to immediate ruling out of *any* new fossil fuel drilling, including Rosebank & Jackdaw & the urgent reinstatement of international climate finance. For more on climate as a security threat, see my podcast for @therestpolitics.bsky.social

++BREAKING++ The UK and Spanish governments have issued a joint statement overnight: "[We] agreed that this summer’s wildfires demonstrated that climate change was now a national security emergency facing Europe and threatening our way of life." www.gov.uk/government/n...

"Most states have a reckless endangerment [law that] criminalizes reckless conduct that creates a substantial risk of injuring [others]. "Some jurisdictions also criminalize conduct that creates a risk of catastrophe, meaning 'widespread injury or damage'…" And also, manslaughter.

Yellow Dot Studios

"We actually don’t need any special new legal innovations like the Nuremberg trials to begin to prosecute these climate crimes. In jurisdictions across the country, there are already criminal laws on the books that describe and proscribe big oil’s conduct."

Trump has killed more than 200 people without due process – no boarding of boats, no drug seizures, no trials. Meanwhile, he has pardoned convicted drug lords. www.complex.com/life/a/backw... Congress needs to hear the take of U.S. citizens on this. civicshout.com/p/tell-congr... #WarCrimes

Here's next cohort. Abt 100k people per yr entering 50 year careers modeled on reaping rewards of growth and/or the concentration of wealth. A demo 3 generations deep that doesn't consent to decarbonization. Not in finance, or tech, or in Musk's case, even as EV maker www.nytimes.com/2024/05/22/b...

It's simpler but different, and if it were just fossil fuel companies it would be a lot easier to fix; we would have fixed it in 1988, or in 1969. If I were to explain this in the remaining number of characters, it's 5M ppl in the US with R1 degrees, rolling over 100k per year as new graduates join.

Covering Climate Now

“The problem with climate change reporting is that sometimes it feels like you’re intellectualizing something that doesn’t actually need to be intellectualized. This is pretty simple. It’s fossil fuel companies destroying our future for a quick buck. That’s all you need to say.” @emorwee.bsky.social

The purpose of assignments is for students to struggle with the assignment so they can learn, not to produce written output. Writing is thinking, people. You can’t outsource learning to the computer.

Charlotte Weatherill

The point isn't to produce essays, it's to teach students how to think for fuck's sake. The minute you automate that, it's over. You might as well close the course. Which they're also doing. This is an attack on learning, and everyone is just shrugging.
