Ahhh I'm so excited to watch you enjoying this! @readywriting.bsky.social and I listened to the audiobook together all the way through while she was visiting.

🤷🏼 Do what works for you! I'm here for at least another decade, so I make it work as I can. And I'm grateful to have friends and their words and pictures in my pocket.

I'm a divorced parent with three kids, a girlfriend who has two kids of her own, and I commute 2 hours each way to work. Even in a culture where dropping by and hanging out is the norm, I'm not around and free to do that. But I text good owls to my owl friend and chat a little & it means something.

I'd take hanging out in person over words and pictures, all things being equal! But my life being what it is, that wouldn't be easy even if people lived closer. And the world before internet and smartphones made for a much sadder and lonelier life. I also do like the serendipity of text sometimes.

My wicked stepmother would only tolerate me being a vegetarian in high school if I was only permitted to eat the frozen veggie patties from Costco for dinner. 🤢 Those were not great times for meat alternatives.

Given where you all live, my long distance bill would be through the roof!

My favorite type of origin story. 🥰 I ran out of Spanish classes in high school but they had this fun writing system on the wall in the same classroom (the teachers were an incredible couple who taught 3-4 different languages) and I decided, "THAT one." Ended up doing a BA/MA in Slavic linguistics.

The Central Asian languages are pretty cool, though! How did you get into that? Right now I've got a student interested in literary text analysis for Kazakh and the tooling leaves a lot to be desired.

Nothing Indo-European fazes me too badly, though I've never had much chance to work with Farsi or other Arabic-script languages. Dabbled in enough Japanese to basically know my way around but my memory for kanji sucked. If a student can read it, I can help them figure out text analysis with it.

Speak, specifically? Probably just Spanish and Russian. 😅 But I muddle through a lot of languages at work.
