Afterwards with the teachers, I was like “So…”best” suit…in Detroit…” Them: No, we know. We got it. 😂 They just needed some guardrails. Because if you ask a Detroit nigga to come to school in their BEST? Baby it’s gonna be red with white pinstripes or cobalt blue and all the finery along with it.

Some of those boys came in Detroit Black Church EASTER suits. My coworkers were like 😳. I had to hold back my laughs because it was SO us 😂. Anyways, we did the lil interviews and the kids did great and learned a lot. They were well prepared.

I just started chuckling to myself remembering something related to the idea of ‘dressing appropriately’… I worked for a (mostly white) company once that was asked to volunteer at a Detroit HS and do mock job interviews for kids. And I guess the teachers told the kids “Wear your best suits”.

Ok yeah, I agree with this here. Even the scrubbiest of my classmates knew how to put that shit on when the occasion called for it. It just never needed to be an everyday thing.

Respectability politics didn’t help you gain freedoms. Tenacity, cooperation, and consistency helped you make progress. They just shot a man in the back of the head while handcuffed and Black female PhDs are applying for admin assistant positions. Please be serious.

I love my city SO so much. Eating great food at a spot I’ve loved for 20 years where like 20% of the people in the building have on Yays and everybody’s getting up to hustle or mack or talk with friends but we all come together to rap Jeezy lyrics together…My HEART.
