You’re calling me an illogical contrarian when you think “Oxbridge is two places not one” is some kind of gotcha. You’re right. Not a single student suffered during covid. There were zero downsides to lockdown and it wasn’t just our last resort in the face of a horrific pandemic. Fuck off.

Well yes, obviously it depends on the drug, but if it depends on the drug then obviously it isn’t inherently bad to take one just because it’s illegal, but for other reasons.

Ok, well you need to be more specific when you leave a vague reply disagreeing with someone, because then they’re going to assume you just disagree with the whole thing and not one small part. I’m sorry I misunderstood.

To be clear it was a good thing on balance that they shut. But we have to be realistic about the fact that it was a balance.

We were talking about the impact the closures had on kids. And undoubtedly having far fewer kids actually attending in-person did cut transmission rates and make it safer for those teachers teaching in-person.

And it feels kinda disingenuous to me to say that means there wasn’t a lockdown. Were we meant to close down the hospitals too, and send all the ICU patients home to be attended to on zoom? We closed down everything we could and thank god it worked.

I mean sure some people were allowed out of lockdown to do their vital jobs, but by and large we were locked up in our homes, working remotely, education all online, the only souls you saw face to face were flatmates or family, and only allowed out to go to the shops or do our one exercise per day.

Not the universities, and that doesn’t change the fact that the vast majority of kids were sent home, while those that didn’t still experienced massive disruption. I think it’s really disingenuous to say that means they didn’t shut, when we’re talking about harms to kids.

Do you mean in the sense that “key workers” didn’t get to properly go into lockdown?

Two students killed themselves at an Oxbridge college where my friend did their PhD, because they were locked up, not allowed to see friends, and not given any mental health support, even when other things reopened. But I suppose that’s “tabloid stuff”.

It’s the universities staying closed after the end of the lockdowns that really pisses me off. Keeping students locked up while everyone else was allowed to carry on with their lives. A whole different ballpark to the necessary evil of closing schools in the face of an unprecedented pandemic.
