I write stuff -- most recently Sherlock Holmes: The Monster of the Mere. Posting about writing, TV, SF, Doctor Who, politics, language, crosswords, things I like, things I'm interested in, things. He/him.

I absolutely support the principle of paying creators for stuff, but it would be useful if people linking to paywalled content would briefly mention the fact, to save me clicking through, rejecting cookies, dismissing popups, getting a couple of paragraphs in and *then* discovering I can't read it.

News sites that allow you to follow specific journalists should also let you block them.

"You have a leader and your leader should have given you a fucking warrant, and if you decide to show the fuck up here knowing you ain't have a warrant, then you are just as culpable. You fucking understand that?" This man is magnificent.

I couldn't possibly be less entitled to an opinion on this, but am I correct in thinking that this whole row is about the lead actor in the adaptation being the wrong shade of Black?

Mechanic of some unspecified kind I never quite understood, optician, or one of two homemakers. Given the period (no dishwashers or washing machines), I'd be terrible at all of those.

Enough “what would you do on the commune questions” If you got sent back 100 years and were given your grandparent’s job, what are you doing?

Coming soon from Channel 4: Do people really need wheelchairs, or are they faking it for a laugh? Are lesbians real, or have they just not met the right man yet? Do foreigners actually not understand English, or do you just need to speak more loudly?

Channel 4 has announced documentary “The Great ADHD Myth?” It “seeks to determine whether ADHD is a genuine neurodevelopmental disorder, or a social construct.”

I mean, I can believe this. It's awful but very much in line with the rest of their approach, both to AI and to the creative industries.

1. I can't believe the govt would actively want to invest in companies that use the copyrighted work of British creatives without permission. Doing so is (i) illegal in the UK, (ii) possibly illegal elsewhere, and (iii) clearly antithetical to protecting its citizens and treating them fairly. 7/10

I've no issues with the cross-gender casting in Elementary, but the weird wrongness of the characterisation becomes almost impossible to get over every time there's a reference to Mycroft Holmes shagging Dr Watson.

I'm considering the merits of the viewpoint that: "These days film is just a particularly up-itself genre of TV, and the only thing that makes it seem special is the experience of going to a pretend-theatre and watching it on a great big screen.

Amusing that Strange New Worlds drops its most unsubtle reference to Doctor Who yet in a story that flatly contradicts at least three Doctor Who stories. It's almost as if they understand how Doctor Who continuity works.

The Rings of Power's selling point is its glorious silliness, and if the Balrog speaks in Simon Pegg's voice it will be gloriously silly. So that works for me.

IGN

For the first time ever, the Balrog will speak in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3! Star Trek and Mission Impossible actor Simon Pegg will be voicing the fiery creature, as revealed at #SDCC 2026.
