Why are Californians so invested in electing Will Dreher to the Washington State legislature? And why are so few people in his own district (46th) donating to him?

Qagggy!

I read his public disclosures, so I know most of Will Dreher's money comes from out of state, with a surprising number from folks at AI companies. What I don't know is whether Will Dreher is an industry plant. I have no idea if he is an industry plant. If he's an industry plant, I have no knowledge.

Generic ballot numbers tend to get outsized attention, but IMO we asked a bunch of interesting stuff in our latest poll, so I want to highlight some of the findings that aren't directly horserace: www.cnn.com/2026/07/30/politics/cnn-poll-midterm-generic-ballot-democrats-republicans-change

In other news: Do you know what a financial market "circuit breaker" is? It's when trading on the market goes so insane up or down that trading is instantly halted, because something fucky has occurred. In South Korea, home of two of the biggest RAM manufacturers, it just happened. Twice.

I woke up before my alarm went off this morning and I couldn't fall back to sleep. Why didn't Katie Wilson do something about it?! What are YOU blaming Katie Wilson for today?

Erica C. Barnett

The Seattle Times editorial board is incandescent—and blames Mayor Katie Wilson—that a text alert didn't go out citywide during Sunday's Bite of Seattle shooting. They have never mentioned SPD's failure to send out these alerts previously, including after shootings when a shooter has been at large.

“What we need to explain to the world: Number one, we are close to creating a genie that can grant any wish. Number two, we are going to make sure that our first wishes broadly benefit humanity” - Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI — This is definitely the opposite of Anthropic’s AI kills all jobs pitch.

Good for Dom Canzone, resisting all entreaties to make it about himself after a monster game.

The anti-housing commentary is standard. Housing destroys tree canopy. Housing kills orcas and salmon. Housing destroys my grandchildren's future. Endless appeals are my civil rights. Black people want this (said by white homeowners.) Etc. I've been sitting here listening. Y'all didn't miss much.

The Times has no fucking shame, using this tragic shooting to baselessly dunk on electeds. Please.

Robert Cruickshank

This is such a dumb angle for the media to take on this event. I remember being in the mayor's office on on May 30, 2012, during the shooting spree that began at Cafe Racer. It was an active event. We debated when to hold a presser. Info kept changing by the minute. Finally we went live...
