The fact that ordinary folks across the country are seeing the tools, companies, and privacy dangers of surveillance tech is heartening, and sort of inspiring, but the problems are deeper than ALPRs. We need more attention paid to the broader dangers of self-surveillance.

Misunderstanding #3: it’s not just privacy that is being eroded, but power. Policing platforms are really panoptic threats to democratic power. Building real-time crime centers and networks of surveillance threatens how we have lived for centuries.

Misunderstanding #2: it is not the company, but the technology. Flock isn’t the only company selling ALPRs. In fact, Axon is directly benefiting from the deflock movement. Axon is all in on AI surveillance. The protest needs to include all ALPRs.

Misunderstanding #1: it is not the surveillance tool, but the systems that are frightening. The camera is not as problematic as the networked system and analytics platform behind it.
