Even if you end up only liking parts of something, you still have to understand it holistically. By all means take the bits you like, do your own thing with them. But if you aren't realistic about the original concept oddities and contradictions will work their way in and eat you up.

Ghost in the Shell is great, but it's also very clearly written by someone far more right wing than me. I don't need to make excuses for how it sees state violence, or well it's lesbian coded perversion so morally okay. It still explores interesting ideas and I can determine the parts I agree with.

I wonder sometimes if people don't really like the things they obsess over, but convince themselves what is popular extols their own beliefs. This fuels the inevitable backlash when it fails to live up to such a standard. Sometimes you gotta accept what you like handles parts in a chud way.

Ichi the Witch keeps rubbing up on concepts I find interesting, then backing off. The story has put a lot of potential points about gender roles on the table, but really hasn't said anything yet. Hopefully this arc actually questions if acquiring majiks is actually kinda messed up at least.

I like Kagurabachi's focus on how the young are both abandoned and put upon. The memes/aura get credit for the series popularity, I think it resonates with so many is as much to do with this Predict the next arc/s will be about breaking the cycle. But I'd like to see them fall into perpetuating it

Part of the issue is how elaborate the ongoing plots have to be. Rather than the vampires were making a big magic gun, and then at in the post credit scene goes oh no Blade blew up the big vampire gun but we still got the magic inside *pans to shadowy figure who can be changed if needs be*

Criticism of modern design often focuses purely on the idea of making things easier. When I think its more accurate to say they're trying to simulate complexity. Lower execution is one part of that, but it is just as true of most bolt on RPG or crafting mechanics. A lot going on but little depth
