Every source creates these, but you need a bright source to actually see them. You can rotate the telescope so they hit different spots in the galaxy, and compensate that way, but the amount of rotation is very limited, typically. They are very difficult to subtract out digitally.

The galaxy is named NGC 1068, and this is the 1068th issue of my newsletter. I waited *months* to publish this article for this particular issue! 😁

Interesting article by my friend Nadia Drake (and edited by my editor, too!) about the difficulties of finding life on Mars. I'm far from convinced we've found evidence, but that's kinda the point. We need better experiments, and perhaps a different way of looking at things.

To be clear- this is catastrophic for radio astronomy, not just in the UK. If you shut down a facility like this not only do we use access to the facility, dozens (hundreds?) of jobs are gone and with it expertise that never comes back. Please write to your MP if you’re in the UK! 🔭🧪🎢
