We made progress with some exciting, applied science that will hopefully help to solve with real-world problems related to estimating restoration effectiveness and the use of different forms of knowledge in restoration practice and policy.

All-in-all it was a fascinating day and I'm looking forward to cracking on with working on some outputs today on biases and blindspots in forest restoration. I'll post more this week, but the pictures might have more meeting rooms and fewer forests for the next few days...

It was also interesting to see the offerings people from the Candomblé religion had made in the forest, although the burning of candles during these ceremonies presents a big risk for the forests, especially during the dry season.

Finally we headed to a 500 ha old growth forest remnant, full of incredible canopy emergent trees. However, the site was surrounded by sugar cane fields and Pedro explained that fragmentation is driving mortality of large trees and arrested succession when gaps open up.

After lunch we headed to a 35 year old semi-deciduous restoration planting. Incredible to see such large trees after a relatively short time. Pedro explained their mixed model of taking some timber from their plantings during the first 20 years of regeneration as a way to finance what they're doing.

Huh, yes I forgot about the whalers making over there. There's a decent amount of stuff about where Basque people went around the world in the Itsasmuseoa in Bilbao and the one in Bermeo. Happy to show you round if you're ever visiting. Enjoy Lisbon, I think it's my favourite Iberian city!

How long are you in Spain for? And where are you off to next? If you happen to be in the Basque Country at some point I'm sure we could organise something (although i'm currently on my way to Brazil for 10 days or so).

I agree completely about the road verges, but all the social services in Extremadura are also crumbling, hence why all the young people from the region are leaving to live in Madrid. In lots of the richer parts of Spain verges are trimmed to within an inch of their lives.

My gut feeling is that this road verge has been left like that because of lack of resources to cut it... People in Spain are generally very picky about 'untidiness', it just happens that this verge is in one of the poorest communities in the country.

Yeah, it's starting to feel unsustainable. I can usually find reviewers but it takes a lot of work and I normally try to secure three reviewers just to ensure two actually submit... And our journal has a pretty massive number of AEs, I wonder how other journals are coping.
