Retired settler in Treaty 6 area; love city life; walker and cyclist in a 2-car, 2-person house; it’s complicated. I don’t chat here.

This is an important understanding. Even if you ignore mis- and disinformation, 45 years of uninterrupted use has made Thatcher/Reaganism conventional wisdom, particularly among heritage media. Any government activity requires constant and long-term selling both before and after being taken.

This is equally true for city planners and our plans and city-building ideas. You have to persuasively SELL those ideas to the public — a public that’s inundated with disinformation. And even once you get an idea or plan passed, you have to KEEP selling it, to “election proof” it.

This is an interesting analysis. It helps me see why conversations with my fellow-boomer neighbours about higher density in-fill development, bike lanes and similar topics go the way they do.

Oh The Urbanity!

I remember chatting about this with @alanthefisher.bsky.social maybe two years ago: anti-urban beliefs made a lot more sense in the past, when cities were legitimately places of crowding and pollution. I appreciate that others also have multi-year timelines on thinking through and finishing videos!

As always, Dr. Todd says important things from an uncommon perspective. You should read her and think.

It's wild that we're encouraged to embrace 'Indigenous AI', but imagine if I phrased it as 'Indigenous nuclear war'. "Indigenising" is not the same as decolonising or abolishing systems of harm. Fanon (1961) warned us the native/colonized petit bourgeoisie would align with capital + empire.

The original post is important, but I really loved the four-step response from emoontxwriter.bsky.social on why spoilers don’t matter and why re-reading is valuable. Nobody I know seems to get this.

Don't come to book club and say "no spoilers please, I haven't finished it yet." The whole point of the evening is to discuss the book and you're only on chapter 5? Piss off!

As I watch my (Edmonton) neighbours light their hair on fire over our new de-zoning process and its related in-fill development, this article hits straight to my heart. Fear of change is no basis for developing a city’s core neighbourhods.

The patio basket tomato plant that Salisbury Greenhouses forced for spring has given up its last picking for the year. Home grown tomatoes will be on hiatus until late next month. However, if you like Roma-style cherry tomatoes, you cannot go wrong with the variety ‘Red Profusion’.

Since we’ve decided to go car-light(er), and I’ve sold my car to my son in Vancouver, here is my now-trusty steed sitting beside Elaine’s car.

Intermission at Freewill Shakespeare. It’s not STO, but it’s certainly a good-sized crowd.
