@doctorow.pluralistic.net is on @laist.com right now laying out in very plain and entertaining terms where we are at with AI. Highly recommend you tune in. Hopefully they’ll make it available for a repeat listen somewhere.

One of my most prized possessions. My old man - who worked for the Chicago White Sox - was able to get his pals at WFLD to surprise me on my tenth bday with this signed @svengoolieofficial.bsky.social photo AND a mention on air. This weekend I turn 53 and still a life long die hard of Sven!

Total bullshit. @vulture.com cough up the money. Freelancers can’t wait 60 days to get paid.

Jason Bailey

Well, it’s invoicing day, and since they’re really apparently not going to pay me for something I wrote for them two months ago, I guess today is the day to post about how @vulture.com fucks over its film freelancers. Long (sorry) thread, with receipts:

Remember - #wednesday

The day after their Oscar win, I saw Glen and Markéta eating Great Kahn’s Mongolian BBQ at the Beverly Center Food Court. That felt fitting as he seemed like a very down to earth dude who just focused on his music. Sorry to hear of his tragic end.

Excellent read about Chicago film history.

Scott Tobias

I've been a critic in Chicago for almost exactly 27 years, and the screening room at the top of 70 E. Lake St. has so many memories for me. Good piece from Richard Roeper, and I love that he talked to the projectionist, Steve Kraus. Great guy, great at his job: www.rogerebert.com/features/a-h...

Oh man! Dream Warriors and The Blob kicked major ass. RIP Chuck

Bloody Disgusting

Filmmaker Chuck Russell has passed away at 74. Chuck Russell directed The Blob & Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors in the 1980s, and later directed The Mask, Eraser, Bless the Child, The Scorpion King, and Witchboard (2025). A horror legacy that will never be forgotten.

Remind me again whatever it is Charlie Kirk did that deserves a memorial highway?

The Tennessee Holler

“It’s an embarrassment for them to have done this.” Vietnam Vets just got Charlie Kirk’s name taken off Vietnam Veterans Highway, leaving egg 🍳 on the face of congressional hopeful Rep. Johnny Garrett + TN Republicans who did it w/o telling them. Full: www.newschannel5.com/news/tdot-re...

This is why we BlueSky.

Larry Karaszewski

In case you’re watching Robert Altman’s “California Split” and wondering what’s the triple bill playing in the deep background when George Segal walks outside the massage parlor - it’s “COME BACK CHARLESTON BLUE” “ENTER THE DRAGON” & “GIMME SHELTER” All for 99 cents.

Living in LA gives me funny ideas about how my day could go. Like I think “maybe today I’ll be at Ralph’s and run into John Carroll Lynch in the bread aisle and I’ll tell him how terrifying he was in The Invitation. And then we discuss.” Doesn’t happen. But it could.

@theyuantwins.bsky.social Can you boost?

#SDCC comic con: our daughter left her 3D printed black dragon in the restroom near E/Starbucks. She printed it herself and is devastated. We checked the restroom and lost and found which means someone picked it up. If you bring it to 5552 I will give you a signed comic as reward
