This might even extend to the entire full-time private sector. It's a lesson we all should really have learned in 2008.

My advice for anyone who remains employed in the video game industry is treat every day you are employed as a bonus. Don't get into debt, don't get a mortgage, don't rent anywhere you can't afford with other income.
