I don't think there's anything wrong with taking sponsorships or creators being compensated fairly for their labor. The problem is the opacity. The dark $$, the lack of disclosure. It creates a dynamic where parasocial relationships are exploited by the elite. It's a violation of trust.

You think you have a parasocial relationship with a large creator? Yeah, chances are they are being paid to use that relationship to influence your politics, your purchases, and to shape your worldview. And the never have to tell you and you think it's their own opinion when it's "pay to say"

The CA gov race influencer drama, now Haley Stevens, Chorus, WitchTok drama, Dem influencers shaping the narrative and pushing candidates the establishment and AIPAC want$...these problems exist of no regulation, no disclosure laws, no ethics and tons of money sloshing around.

To be fair, the week this all happened, I was the victim of a violent crime and the mean untrue shit some rando said on tiktok seemed less than 1% important, so I just said fuck it and took my vids down. But a year later, if we want to fix social media, we need dark $$ out, we need disclosure.

I got bullied into taking my videos down. I got death threats. At least 2 tiktokkers fabricated stories about me and spread them. My YouTube fans who sided with Wired got mad at me for taking my videos down and earlier this year, I put them back up on YouTube. I was 100% right.

Former mutuals of mine made videos calling me a Nazi lover. Dozens of mutuals (many of whom publically admitted they immediately applied for Chorus) dragged me for weeks while claiming dark $$ was a GOOD THING. TikTok was a shitshow full of weaponized fans, disinfo, and lies (what's new?).

After the absolute hell I went thru last year on TikTok after @taylorlorenz.bsky.social's Wired article came out, and I made a series of vids saying that we need regulation, disclosure laws, and a code of ethics for social media creators, I love/hate being proven correct over and over in 2026.

I think the context and origins of these big creators is so important. So is noticing the company they keep. And what issues they stay silent on and how they shape stories. In a capitalistic system, it's about profit and control. "Media" commands the attention of millions, who profits from that?

It's been eye-opening to realize how few of the big influencers, "new media", talking heads, YTers in the political sphere are organic. They rise to the top bc The $$ secures them a position there. Who benefits from these folks shaping the narratives, our worldview and actions?

It's obvious that they don't like Trump, but it's also obvious that they are aligned with certain ideologies and politicians and have their own agenda. I think they are people who can be part of that big tent for defeating fascism but they're also folks who benefit from the status quo.

Bc they pushed a narrative of being just some little guys challenging big media. When really they were is what Netflix is to cable TV: the newest iteration of the same old same old: Repackaged dark $$ messaging supplanting the old stale dinosaur of corporate media with a shiny new veneer.

I'm not canceling anyone or saying we can't consume content from these folks, but we shouldn't believe the fictions - or write our own - about who they are, who benefits from their influence, and what drives their messaging and shapes their perspective and narrative.
