The state of things right now: - There is no evidence that the recalled Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce was sent to New York - NYS officials say NY has seen 632 cases since May 1 - NY health dept spox tells me that that number does "not represent a major deviation from the norm"

Update: An FDA spokesperson confirmed that the agency has removed New York from its map of states where the recalled Taylor Farms lettuce was "confirmed" to be distributed after I reached out to ask them about New York's inclusion. NY's inclusion on the map appears to have been in error.

Worth flagging it's entirely possible this is irrelevant and these herbs are just part of a local outbreak (or even just an errant early signal) NC officials say they've sent several hundred specimens to the CDC, so if they're actually connected to cases elsewhere, we will hopefully find out soon

Yesterday, the FDA said it's investigating a new cyclo outbreak linked to a unidentified product I asked if the parsley & cilantro linked cases in NC are involved or if the herbs have been linked to cases in other states. FDA ignored those questions in its response. NC officials declined to comment

Though the findings are preliminary & no definitive source has been ID'd yet, the herbs appear to be among the first additional foods that health officials have publicly linked to at least some of the reported cyclo cases this summer, aside from lettuce www.consumerreports.org/health/food-...

Interestingly, state officials said lettuce may also be involved, but also stressed that the spike of cases in NC so far doesn't appear to be related to the cluster of illnesses “associated with lettuce and Taco Bell” in other states, and that they're not testing any lettuce at this time

i love what i do and i am so lucky i get to do it alongside such a brilliant team of reporters, editors, and scientists. (also yes, i was a day late in remembering my own work anniversary because my Reddit AMA on the current outbreak blew up! what a wonderful problem to have)

this week marks one year for me @consumerreports.org ! it's been a real whirlwind: over the last 12 months, my reporting has prompted a state AG investigation, class action lawsuit, the introduction of state regulation, and at least one halloween costume — and i'm just getting started!

THIS You know that "Trump cancelled a program that tracked Cyclospora" thing? That was FoodNet, which is a *long-term library of disease data.* It's not a track-the-outbreaks-in-real-time tool! FoodNet could be fully functional on tracking Cyclospora, & it still wouldn't help with this outbreak!
