Very much enjoying teaching and meeting students and fellow instructors at the USSP* in Urbino, Italy this week. And the views and gelato ain’t half bad either 😉 *urbino summer school in Paleoclimatology

My god, I’m enjoying this football match!

RE: ‘complex cross-subsidies in HE’ the humanities (and business school) depts subsidise the more expensive STEM depts within each uni. £9.5k p/yr doesn’t touch the sides of educating a geology or chemistry student with pricey fieldcourses or labs, but an English/ history student is cheap!

I’ll be force feeding my piece down your throats bit by bit for the next few days. This is about why loss of research capability in universities isn’t just a linear bit of market forces but a messy process of universities sometimes doing panicky short term cuts

So cool to see these iconic sculptures restored. As a south Londoner, I always loved going to Palace to check out the (dilapidated but cool) old dinos.

Heading back early* from the big shindig to celebrate the restoration of Crystal Palace Park and the @cpdinosaurs.bsky.social. I'm proud to have played a part in a huge effort to repair and restore the Dinosaurs... *Stupid trains.

Enjoy a very late #wildflowerhour (wildflower lunchbreak?) from me, courtesy of the coastal paths of the Roseland, Cornwall. Saw so many beautiful species yesterday, but have focused on the ones with ‘common’ in their name that are not so common around here!

I don’t often care much for the passing of famous people, but I feel genuinely sad that Sam Neill is gone. 😔 A great, versatile actor who came across like a normal, decent person. RIP.

Terrible wildfires in southern Spain kill at least 11 people. Looks absolutely terrifying. This is exactly the beautiful area (near Bedar) where we took our geology students in May for their final year field course. See photo. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/j...

Did someone slip the Paraguay -France ref some crypto before the match to look the other way…? 🤔 Takes a lot to make the English root for the French, yet here we are!

We all know that Universities are run on good will and coffee…. and this week all we got left is coffee. 🔥 ☕️

“The creative arts are so important in the south-west. These cuts are really ill thought out and they threaten the very things that make me proud of Exeter. Please think again. This is a terrible mistake.” [Geography and Engineering also on the chopping block!] www.theguardian.com/education/20...

Extinction Rebellion have stormed the stage in protest at the sponsorship from Howden group (who underwrite fossil fuel developments). And outside is a growing group protesting the compulsory redundancies (in areas such as environmental sciences and renewable engineering of all subjects!!)

This working week has been awful, so let’s all enjoy these wonderful pollinators swarming the wild carrot patch at my allotment for #wildflowerhour

That’s a precipitous drop!! 😱

New data on insect pollinators show a dramatic decline in hoverflies across Great Britain between 2017–2024. 📉 Around one third reduction in abundance & number of hoverfly species recorded as part of @pomscheme.bsky.social www.ceh.ac.uk/press/new-da... 1/ @jncc.bsky.social 🧪

UK Higher Education is a slow motion disaster movie. And no one is coming to save us (or our students) from the decimation. We will look back on this period of destruction in the same way we look back at the Brexit vote. Oooops! I’m so done with this sector 😡 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
