Dear christ in heaven, the electronic billboards near Staples need to be destroyed. The light from them is visible from at least a mile away.

I-10 to CA 86 South in Indio. Once you're past Salton "City" by about 5-10 miles, it's pretty damn dark. I love seeing the stars out there. 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic. Don't go too far though, or you'll hit the bizarrely expanding Imperial Valley.
