Anatomy and physiology when I was in college has allowed me to regularly be accused of writing very authentic war fiction despite absolutely never serving in the military or being in war. Homer's knowledge of anatomy and physiology is one reason why a lot of people think that he was a soldier.

I had my monster ripping off limbs and separating torso from the pelvis through the abdominal cavity, spilling viscera all over the place. All right I'm not sure whether I'm answering as a biologist or as a an author who literally had people torn apart by a monster in their last thing they wrote, but almost all of life on earth grows from a segments so probably the space between the segments.

When you see things like artworks made of destroyed books this is what those books are used for. You were not allowed in the past to do this with stripped books, for example. Next time you see a artwork using destroyed books... zoom in on the titles, they're technical manuals and school textbooks.

Now before you go "oh no they destroyed the manuals for that wedge irradiator!" I should point out that the wall of manuals that I am aware of that existed until the 21st century involved an irradiator that was retired, removed and deaccessioned in 1986.

I really, really wish that one of these contract settlements was going to pay works for hire people because I would be making bank off of that, but it would be morally wrong and ethically dubious to do so. These are literally the same books that are incorporated into things as building materials.

What it does do however is it allows you to create a giant statistical data set about what order words occur in. The authors of those books were paid precisely once under works for hire contracts. As weird as it is, the AI companies are the only ones preserving those books.

Each of those manuals is technically a rare book. That WALL is a library of rare books. You can't recycle them because of rules about recycling bound books. A company purchasing them, scanning them, and then destroying them hurts exactly no one.

For example, at one of my employers THERE WAS A SHELF of printed manuals for a cesium wedge irradiation unit. There was no change in how radiation worked each of these years just new requirements that they send a new manual, one for every machine, an entire wall of manuals we were required to keep.

I literally had a job digitizing old books for industrial employers. I assure you, the books AI companies are destroying would have been pulped without scanning otherwise. THERE ARE ENTIRE FLOORS of factories, hospitals and warehouses that are nothing but books that are *rare* AND WITHOUT VALUE.

Whenever people in the South talk about a new Civil War I think about their data coming from the Northeast, even Fox News, with a smaller amount coming across the Rockies. I don't think kids would put up with no phones for long. It will be interesting to see how Russians take a real data blackout.

My grandparents were not yet born 100 years ago, my great-grandparents were artists, journalists and WWI soldiers. I am the only person I know of who would've been in a better financial situation if I was their generation not my own, including refugees who traveled in a luxury stateroom.

Apparently he put it all up with superglue so strong nail polish remover fumes should be enough to make them fall off of the walls. If they were solid gold they would actually damage the walls and floor but because they're just spray painted plastic there's no downside to removing it that way.

The examples that people are given of rare books that they think are going to end up destroyed and scanned are actually the least helpful things from the point of view of training an LLM. It's more likely to get your 9th grade high school poetry annual than the book of an unknown great poet.

The guillotine cutters used by some AI companies to scan books can't handle stuff like sewn dagged edge rag paper. They're buying things like old libraries owned by sign companies that had thousands of books of font samples. They aren't buying anyone's 18th century book about the concept of signs.

Take some time to look up what's happening (and never trust futurism articles) because it really is book warehouses and things like 30 year old encyclopedias. Those books would be pulled already. It's not "rare literature" it's stuff like 1995 AP English review books.
