Somehow my parents were super progressive for the time. It was hard to come out to them even though I knew they didn’t give a shit. Also my brother, whose picture was in the dictionary as the quintessential red neck. He never gave one fuck I was gay and would challenge anyone who gave me shit.

Thank you so much! He was the most decent man I’ve ever met. When he took me to the bus to go to the airport to go to West Germany for my foreign exchange, he gave me a big hug and kissed me. I was so embarrassed at the time, but now it’s one of my most cherished moments with my Pop.

Around this time in 1992 I went home to tell my mother and father I was gay. They were both relived, my dad said: “thank god, we thought something was wrong…” He was my greatest ally until his death in 2024. I wish he were here with me now.
