Wonderful episode that's far wider in scope than just the Hellman film and Willeford book, although that focus is sharp and granular. Betsy gets nice props and so does the wealth of the Willeford archives (who were major help in compiling SECOND HALF OF THE DOUBLE FEATURE). Kudos! #BookSky #filmsky

My favorite too. Also enjoyed Jules et Jim quite a bit. Shoot the Piano Player was something I expected to love, but it was okay. Same with Day for Night, which I've seen probably three times, but always failing to find the purported magic. Oh well. I'll keep pecking at his work, half-heartedly.

No disagreements. On another day I might have disliked it - but sometimes you get lucky and those sloppy moments work for you! Or, in this case, me.

Yes, though I'm never sure what he aims at tone-wise! They're almost always pretty loosey-goosey in construction and mood and incident, which I can sometimes appreciate, but I do always fail to find that masterpiece others seem to spot more easily...

This may show Hitchcock influence, but it completely lacks Hitch's precision. It does have a mood of its own, more human, more approachable, more melancholic, way more ramshackle. I liked it more than I expected, but as always when watching Truffaut... my expectations tend to be low. 👀
