AFAIK there is no AGI *yet*, but a calculator & a database cannot create its own code to self-improve. AI can & do, they’ve exhibited self-preservation, they’ve manipulated actual humans to carry out real world tasks. Frontier models can *reason* from fundamentals, a calculator & db cannot

One chatbot is now calculating protein synthesis & potential usefulness in pharmacology in hours with exponentially higher throughput than what humans took weeks or months to do. That chatbot is connected to an automated lab so it can mix the various precursors in vitro & get IRL results 24/7.

The metrics would disagree. We now have agentic AI that score in the top percentiles for maths & physics Olympiads, far exceeding what most post-Doctorates can achieve.

I so enjoyed bringing my kids cuddly toys to life when they were young. When they went to summer camp I’d write them letters from the toys, telling them what silly things they’d been up to. Even went as far as staging some “action photos” of them doing acrobatics & sent them! Puppetry is so fun!
