also fodor really likes this idea that folk psychology is a 'theory', and i've come to find that pretty unhelpful because it's ambiguous between a collection of abstracta (propositions or something), a set of concrete beliefs with that content (and folk psychology is neither of those things anyway)

dennett blends the psychology and the metaphysics into this unhelpful quasi-realist soup (and is wrong that folk psychology is fundamentally normative besides), fodor is mostly just right (ofc), but emphasizes the continuity with other special sciences and downplays the different psych principles

my own view on the matter is that, psychologically speaking, folk physics and folk psychology operate according to incommensurable sets of principles (that's why there's an explanatory gap, incidentally), and metaphysically speaking folk psychology is just a special science (that's why it works)

don't really relate to people going 'the classy thing to do is to prevaricate because of money'. i don't find that particularly classy tbh

i think it would be fair to say the disagreement between dennett and fodor is in substantial part a disagreement about whether we are just like the aliens you're imagining (fodor) or instead doing this rationalizing interpretationist thing (dennett)
